Trump demands death penalty for New York truck attack suspect

President Donald Trump is demanding the death penalty for the suspect in the New York attack who mowed down pedestrians and bikers. Many experts are questioning his call since the case is currently being investigated and many are wondering if it will have any impact on the prosecutor's case against the suspect.

According to investigators, the suspect, Sayfullo Saipov has admitted to having planned the attack for over a year after being inspired by Islamic State videos. He also said that he felt good after killing the people and also requested the investigator to allow him to place the Islamic State flag in the hospital room where he was being kept. Donald Trump, on Wednesday suggested the suspect be sent to the Guantanamo Bay military prison in Cuba, but backtracked on Thursday saying that it would be very complicated to do that and it would be better to keep him in the place where he committed the crime.

According to US attorney Joon Kim, Saipov will be facing two charges and one of which carries the death penalty in case the government seeks it. The first charge is one count of violence with a motor vehicle causing the death of eight people that carry the death penalty, and the other is providing material support and sources to a terrorist organization ISIS that carries life imprisonment. There is just one more person on federal death row convicted for an act of terrorism - Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who was one of the members responsible for the 2013 Boston Marathon attack.

Saipov spoke to the investigators from his bed at Bellevue Hospital Center in Manhattan where he was being treated for a gun wound. He also waived his rights to remain silent to avoid self-incrimination and also the right to have an attorney at his side. Saipov also told the investigators that he was motivated by a video that he saw of the ISIS leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi where he was asking Muslims from around the world to support their cause. A number of ISIS-related propaganda videos and images were found on his Smartphone that included videos of prisoners getting beheaded, run over by tanks and being shot in the face.

Another man with the name Mukhammadzoir Kadirov, age 32, is also being held for questioning for the attack. According to reports, Mukhammadzoir Kadirov and Saipov were in contact with each other for a long time.
